Drug Regimen Review

Drug regimen review is a critical function of the consultant pharmacist, and is required for nursing home residents. The principles of drug regimen review, however, can be applied to seniors (and other patients) in a wide variety of settings. The purpose of this web page is to provide ASCP members with information and links to resources to assist in conducting effective drug regimen reviews.

For a comprehensive overview of the drug regimen review, refer to a 3-part series of articles published in ASCP’s journal, The Consultant Pharmacist, in 2003.
ASCP is providing the Drug Regimen Review Framework (Table 1 from the June 2003 article) and the Drug Regimen Review Checklist (Table 1 from the August 2003 article) on this web page for your ready reference. See the text of the articles for more details about the framework and checklist.

A critical part of the drug regimen review process is communicating drug regimen review findings and recommendations to prescribers. ASCP's journal, The Consultant Pharmacist, published an article about this subject in the May 2002 issue:
Martin CM. Effective communication with prescribers: tips and insights from both sides of the fence. The Consultant Pharmacist. 2002;17(5):378-85.
